 Jackson named Outstanding Alumnus
Harvey Mudd College Alumni have seen or heard of Jerome Jackson ’76 many times over the last 10 years. He’s authored countless letters in support of the Alumni Fundd, is on his third term as a member of the Alumni Association Board of Governors (and, during these terms, has held the offices of assistant treasurer, treasurer and president), and most recently finished a two-year term as an alumnus representative to the board of trustees. He’s hosted events, spoken at the Dr. Bruce J. Nelson ’74 Distinguished Speaker Series, hired many young alumni at his company Stellartech Research Corp. and, ironically, helped create the criteria for the Outstanding Alumni Award.
His excellent service to HMC aside, Jerome has had an amazing impact on society through his scientific contributions that many may be unaware of, due to his humble ways. Currently, Jerome is vice president for research and development at Stellartech Research Corporation. Stellartech provides its customers with design, development and manufacturing services for medical devices that incorporate electronic hardware and computer software. In a unique set-up, they support customers through proof of principle in clinical testing and regulatory approval.
Jerome has over 25 years of experience developing passive and active mechanical, electromechanical and electronic medical devices. He has developed a broad range of products including permanent implants (such as intraocular lenses and heart valves); short-term indwelling products (such as cardiovascular, neurological and urological catheters); and embedded microprocessor controlled radio frequency (RF) ablation systems. Jerome has also developed RF heating and ablation systems for gastroenterology, cardiology and dermatology (skin tightening applications), as well as a variety of devices with applications for neurology, ophthalmology and urology. He has extensive experience developing products that integrate many technical disciplines and frequently involve software control of electro-mechanical systems. In all, Jerome is a named inventor on over 34 U.S. patents for successful medical devices, now on the market, that are making a significant contribution to extending and improving the quality of life for many thousands of people.
In his nomination of Jerome, Gary Seeger ’66 said, “I think Jerome personifies the kind of HMC graduate the founders had in mind when they set the mission for HMC. They wanted to produce scientists who made significant contributions to society. I think one has to know and observe Jerome on a regular basis to understand what an outstanding human being he has become and the contributions he has made, because he is so quiet and unassuming…. Jerome is one of the most competent, hard working and giving people I have had the pleasure of knowing. He is the epitome of what HMC sets out to do.”
Jerome will be presented with the Harvey Mudd College Outstanding Alumni Award on Saturday, April 29, 2006, during Alumni Weekend. Recipients of the award are nominated to the Selections Committee of the HMC Alumni Association Board of Governors.

50/50 is the Goal
Through direct communications to the college, and e-newsletter participation, it has been observed that the alumni of Harvey Mudd College are quite interested in how the college performs in the annual U.S. News and World Report college rankings, and are often frustrated that HMC is not ranked higher. However, alumni can help. A significant component in determining these rankings is participation in the Alumni Fundd. So, this year the alumni are challenged to not only assist in maintaining their significant contributions to the annual operating fund, but also to show their satisfaction with their HMC experience by simply participating. This past year netted a 40 percent participation in the Alumni Fundd. We recognize that there are many worthy requests for philanthropic support these days, but a unified effort to attain 50 percent participation in the Alumni Fundd would do much to help HMC attract the best students and elevate the prestige of the college.
